Reeves Callaway had always dreamt of embarking on racing career but could not afford it and joined Bob Bondurant’s racing school, as a driver. Callaway used the newly launched BMW320i and learned the advantages and drawbacks of the car. He wanted to fine tune for more power and thus took the model to his garage at Old Lyme.
Hence Callaway constructed and installed his first prototype turbocharger system and offered it to Don Sherman to test drive. After test driving, Don Sherman had written a one-page article on the modified car which drew great reviews. Sherman suggested to Callaway that he could manufacture turbocharger kits to BMW. Thus Callaway Cars Inc. was formed in1977.
From then on, Callaway developed turbocharger kits to almost all leading car manufacturers like Audi, BMW, Porsche, Volkswagen and Mercedes Benz. It is headquartered at Old Lyme with West coast facilities at Orange County, California and European facilities at Leingarten, Germany. The company suffixes all their projects with C followed by the project number. It is available in three models. They are Cabrio, Coupe and Speedster.
